“Bargain Britain” is how some recent overseas buyers of English antique furniture described the current opportunities in the UK. According to the 2012 Antique Furniture Index, overall prices are at the same level as they were over 20 years ago in 1989. The index compiled annually since 1960 by John Andrews, managing editor of Antique Collecting is based on a cross section of 1400 typical retail shops and saleroom prices from seven different periods and styles. The best bargains currently can be found amongst late Victorian and Edwardian pieces.
